17. Overtourism

Updated: Dec 11, 2019

Travelling for fun is termed as tourism. As a part of the service sector, tourism industry has become an important source of income for every country and it also generates employments and revenues. Do you know it is becoming a problem for the whole world? Yes, thousands and thousands of tourists go to a place and leave a lot of plastic trash behind. They interrupt wildlife and destroy nature for their own selfish needs. It is known as overtourism.

There is only one country in Asia which is fixing the overtourism problem, that country is- Philippines, a lovely country with over 7 million tourists a year. After some point, the beauty of country started suffering. The government and the Pilipino decided to fix this problem. They considered nature as their first prioritys. They closed the bays and the beaches and demolished buildings to make rooms for sand. They cleaned the beaches, banned the plastics. This was not enough, they created a sewage system to drain the sewage.

The beach which was looking like a wasteland, they turned it into a beautiful beach for people again. They replaced diesel tricycles to electric ones. Isn’t it really nice? They actually didn’t only plan but took actions as well. The most important step they took was to put limitations on the numbers of boats and protected corals from boats. They even limited the numbers of tourists on the island so it doesn’t get overcrowded.

After fixing everything and after all the legal decisions they reopened the beaches and bays. This is a perfect example of sustainable tourism. We need to understand that it is not only government’s responsibility for cleanliness but our also. First, we need to stop spreading pollution then only the process of cleanliness will work.

Let’s take our responsibility to clean as well as not letting anybody to pollute our place. Let’s set another wonderful example like Philippines. Be a tourist, not a problem for tourism.
