47. Japan’s spirit of collectivism

Updated: Mar 27, 2020

We all know that Japan has faced a lot of disasters like Great Hanshin earthquake, Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, the Great East Japan earthquake. No wonder how Japan has handled all these disasters within the short period of time. Japan has set a great example for the world by their disaster management skills.

After the world war 2, when the whole nation was shattered by the atomic bombing on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, it was almost impossible for Japan to recover. But the spirit of collectivism and the spirit of nationality brought the nation together. Building of Tokyo Tower, taller than Eiffel Tower and amongst the tallest structures in the world ignited the fire of nationalism among Japanese people when it was needed the most. Japan showed the world their skills in engineering and technology when Tokyo Tower was presented to the public as world’s tallest freestanding tower. The tower was sign of the Japan’s resurgence.

In 1964, again Japan became the talk of the town as they hosted the Tokyo Olympics with great success. Now it was a truly transformed Japan. Japan had travelled this transformation journey in less than 20 years. It was a big challenge for Japan to invite the whole world to their country. They had a lot to modernise in their infrastructure, subway lines, airport etc. During this modernization in Japan, the project of bullet train that would connect Japan islands to its Asian continent was revived. It had to be finished before the start of the Olympic and it was finished on time. That bullet train became the fastest train in the world of that time and again Japan proved that they are the technological leader.

Today in a competitive world where each and every individual try to compete with other individual, Japanese collectivism generates stronger bond within their societies which I feel is the main reason why today Japan is one of the most developed country in the world.
